Design and dates
The Morgan dollar is named for designer George T. Morgan. The classic series was struck from 1878 through 1904 and again in 1921. Liberty appears on the obverse, while an eagle with outstretched wings appears on the reverse.
Mints and varieties
Original Morgan dollars were produced at Philadelphia, Carson City, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Denver. Mint mark location, date, die variety, strike, luster, and surface preservation all affect identification and collector interest.
