From Timely to Marvel
The company now known as Marvel published *Marvel Comics* #1 in 1939 under the Timely Comics name. During the 1950s, many of its publications carried the Atlas globe mark. The Marvel name became firmly associated with the line in the early 1960s.
The Marvel Age
*Fantastic Four* #1, cover-dated November 1961, helped establish a connected superhero line shaped by creators including Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, and others. Characters argued, worried about money, and lived in recognizable places, giving the stories a different rhythm from many earlier superhero books.
What collectors record
Publisher names, volume numbers, issue numbers, cover dates, and indicia dates should be recorded separately. Earlier Timely and Atlas material belongs to the same broad corporate lineage, but the name printed in a particular issue remains important catalog information.
