A publishing lineage
DC Comics grew from companies including National Allied Publications, Detective Comics, Inc., and related publishing operations. The initials “DC” came from *Detective Comics*, one of the company's long-running titles.
Landmark characters
Superman appeared in *Action Comics* #1 in 1938, followed by Batman in *Detective Comics* #27 in 1939 and Wonder Woman in *All Star Comics* #8 in 1941. Their success helped establish the superhero as a durable American comics genre.
Cataloging DC books
Collectors should distinguish the publisher named in an issue's indicia from the modern DC brand. Series title, issue number, volume, cover date, and printing are stronger identifiers than a logo alone.
